Defence Minister accuses former ISI Chief of political interference, says more charges expected

SIALKOT: The ISI Chief Faiz Hameed acted as the “in-charge” of what he described as a political project aimed at installing Imran Khan through manipulated political processes.

The defence minister said the former intelligence chief had already been sentenced following a trial that lasted 15 months. He added that additional allegations remain under investigation and that legal proceedings on those matters would begin shortly.

In this regard, Khawaja Asif alleged that under Faiz Hameed’s supervision, cases were initiated against Nawaz Sharif to facilitate the rise of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan to power.

He claimed that Faiz Hameed acted as the “in-charge” of what he described as a political project aimed at installing Imran Khan through manipulated political processes.

In this sense, Faiz Hameed continued to support Imran Khan’s political career during his tenure as Corps Commander Peshawar and later played a role in what he described as electoral manipulation.

He said several individuals were involved in this effort, which he claimed resulted in vital political and institutional damage over a four-year period. Meanwhile, Khawaja Asif further alleged that democratic institutions were undermined during that time, stating that parliament had been reduced to a subordinate role.

He claimed that the events of May 9, which saw attacks on military installations and memorials, were planned as part of a joint effort involving Faiz Hameed and the PTI founder. He said the public destruction and unrest that day harmed national unity and disrespected the armed forces and the memory of fallen soldiers.

So far, the defence minister emphasized that accountability should extend beyond individuals already named, including those allegedly hiding within the bureaucracy and other institutions.

He noted that the military itself conducted the trial against Faiz Hameed, calling it evidence of institutional accountability. However, Khawaja Asif said that conspiratorial elements were still attempting to restore Imran Khan to power, warning that such efforts could further destabilize the country.

He praised the role of the current civilian and military leadership, crediting Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the armed forces for helping stabilize the country during difficult times.
