KARACHI : In a brazen daylight heist, armed robbers looted Rs 6.5 million from the Edhi Center in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area on Saturday, sparking outrage and prompting a high-level response from the Sindh government.
According to an Edhi spokesperson, the cash had been withdrawn from a bank earlier in the day specifically to disburse salaries to the center’s employees. However, before the funds could be distributed, four armed suspects riding two motorcycles stormed the facility, snatched the money at gunpoint, and fled the scene.
Police officials confirmed that the suspects wore helmets during the attack, making identification difficult. Initial statements have been recorded from the center’s staff, who are providing details to investigators. Authorities are currently obtaining CCTV footage from the vicinity to trace the culprits, and a thorough investigation is underway.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, who has demanded an immediate report from the Inspector General of Police. In a statement, the CM emphasized the Edhi Center’s vital role as a sanctuary for the poor and abandoned, urging law enforcement to expedite the probe.
“This is an attack on an institution that serves the most vulnerable,” the chief minister said. “The suspects must be brought to justice without delay. The protection of citizens’ lives and property remains the government’s top priority.”
Police have assured that all resources are being mobilized to track down the perpetrators, though no arrests have been made so far. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
