NEW YORK: US President Donald Trump praised Pakistan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), describing Pakistan as a “great country” and the prime minister as a “terrific man.”
Trump made the remarks during his UNGA speech on Tuesday while discussing a range of international issues, including conflicts, diplomacy and artificial intelligence.
Referring to his recent interactions with Pakistan’s leadership, Trump said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had called him to thank him for the US role in helping Pakistan with an issue he described as important.
“Pakistan is a great country. PM Shehbaz Sharif, a terrific man,” Trump said.
Trump also claimed that his intervention had contributed to ending the conflict between Pakistan and India in May 2025, saying the development helped save millions of lives. His account of the episode was presented as part of his broader remarks about his administration’s diplomatic efforts.
Trump further claimed that he had helped settle eight wars during his time in office.
The US president’s comments about Pakistan came during a wide-ranging speech in which he also addressed the conflict involving Iran, artificial intelligence, the United Nations and relations with several countries.
On Iran, Trump said the conflict had prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon and warned that he could take further action if no agreement was reached. He said he expected negotiations to resume following the US midterm elections.
Trump also criticised proposals for international supervision of artificial intelligence, arguing that the United States should maintain control over the development of the technology.

He discussed what he called “super intelligence” and said the US government would use the term in its communications instead of “artificial intelligence.”
The president also renewed his criticism of the United Nations and international institutions, including the International Criminal Court, while outlining his administration’s position on US sovereignty and military personnel.
His remarks on Pakistan marked one of the notable moments of his UNGA address, particularly his public praise for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his description of Pakistan as a “great country.”
