KARACHI: MQM-Pakistan leader Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has said that devolution of powers to grassroots level can help resolve public issues and ensure that the benefits of democracy reach ordinary citizens at their doorsteps.
In a statement, Siddiqui said a public referendum would be held and urged the people of Karachi to come out of their homes and demonstrate their presence. He said citizens were not slaves and must play an active role in shaping the future of their communities and the country.
Devolution of Powers to Grassroots Level Needed to Empower People
Siddiqui said his party wanted the benefits of democracy to reach every Pakistani. He said power should be taken to the streets and that people should be empowered by transferring authority to the lowest levels of government.
Meanwhile, MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar said the creation of new administrative units had become necessary. He claimed that six administrative units were going to be established in the country.

Sattar also criticised the Pakistan Peoples Party, saying its tenure was nearing its end. He said his party would not allow the administrative units of Larkana, Sukkur, Nawabshah and Karachi to remain under the control of the PPP.
He alleged that Sindh was facing worse governance than other provinces and argued that a transfer of power became necessary when governance deteriorated significantly.
Sattar further said people were seeking an empowered local government system that could address their issues at the grassroots level.
