QUETTA: Senior Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) commander Dr Abdul Rasheed, alias “Nokhab,” was reportedly killed during a clash with Iranian security forces in Saravan, Iran, according to sources.
The reported BLA commander killed in Iran was allegedly operating from Iranian territory for several years. His presence and reported death in Saravan have raised fresh questions about the militant group’s cross-border activities.
BLA in Iran
According to sources, Nokhab maintained his activities from Iran and remained involved in the BLA’s senior militant network. His reported presence in Saravan suggests that the group’s operatives may have used Iranian territory to hide, maintain contacts and preserve organisational links.
Sources also described Nokhab as a close associate of BLA commander Dr Nasir. They said he played a role in the group’s senior network and that his death could affect the BLA’s command structure.
The reported development has also drawn attention to the challenges faced by security forces along the Pakistan-Iran border. Militants operating across borders can exploit difficult terrain and established networks to evade law enforcement and maintain their activities.
BLA Cross-Border Network
The reported killing has highlighted concerns over the BLA cross-border network and the alleged use of neighbouring territory by militant elements.
Pakistani security officials have repeatedly alleged that foreign support and cross-border facilitation contribute to militant violence in Balochistan. Islamabad has also accused external actors of supporting militant groups operating against Pakistan.
Pakistan has further alleged links involving India, Israel and the BLA. However, such claims about foreign involvement require independent verification.
The latest development nevertheless underscores the importance of regional security cooperation. Pakistan has consistently maintained that an effective counterterrorism strategy requires action against militant commanders, facilitators and support networks operating from neighbouring areas.
