The government has announced the procedure for citizens seeking subsidised petrol under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s special petrol relief scheme, offering a relief of Rs100 per litre to eligible users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Qingqi vehicles and cars with engine capacity of up to 800cc.
The eligible citizens can register through SMS by sending their details to 9771. The registration message is required to include “REG”, the applicant’s Computerised National Identity Card (CNIC) number, vehicle registration number, province and registration date.
How to Register for the Petrol Subsidy
After sending the required information to 9771, applicants will receive a confirmation message once their registration has been completed. The SMS-based process is intended to allow eligible citizens to register without having to visit a government office.
Once registered, applicants will need to obtain a token before visiting a participating petrol station. According to the announced procedure, citizens should send “TOK” to 9771 before going to the petrol pump. A token number will then be issued to the registered applicant.
The token will contain the information required to avail the subsidised petrol. Applicants will have to present the token at the petrol station to receive the designated fuel benefit.
The message issued to the applicant will also indicate the eligible quantity of petrol and the period during which the relief can be used. Citizens are therefore advised to check the SMS carefully and use the subsidy within the specified validity period.
