Apple has officially released iOS 27, bringing a major software upgrade to compatible iPhone models along with new artificial intelligence capabilities and improvements across several of its built-in apps. The update became available to users on September 14, 2026.
The latest operating system introduces a broad range of improvements designed to make everyday iPhone use more convenient. Apple has highlighted updates across apps and services including Mail, Safari, Camera, Photos and Maps, while other system-level features have also received upgrades. Apple says iOS 27 is designed to make the overall iPhone experience more responsive and useful.
One of the most closely watched changes is the transformation of Siri through Apple’s latest generation of Apple Intelligence. The new Siri AI is designed to understand personal context, interact more naturally with users, recognise what is displayed on the screen and perform more actions across apps. Apple describes it as a substantially more capable and conversational version of its digital assistant.
While iOS 27 supports a wide range of iPhones, the advanced Apple Intelligence capabilities require newer hardware. Apple lists iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models and later, iPhone 17 models, iPhone 18 models and the new iPhone Duo among the devices compatible with Apple Intelligence.
This means owners of older compatible iPhones may receive iOS 27 but will not necessarily have access to all of its AI-powered capabilities.
Which iPhones Support iOS 27?
Apple’s official compatibility list extends considerably further than its Apple Intelligence requirements. iOS 27 supports the iPhone 11 series and newer models, as well as the second-generation iPhone SE and later. The supported lineup includes the iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and newer generations, with compatible variants included.
The distinction is therefore important: an iPhone can be eligible for iOS 27 without being eligible for Apple Intelligence.
With iOS 27, Apple is placing artificial intelligence more deeply into the everyday iPhone experience. The combination of a redesigned and more capable Siri, enhanced Apple Intelligence features and updates to major apps marks another significant step in Apple’s effort to make its devices more intelligent while maintaining its focus on privacy.
