Pakistan and Lebanon have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at facilitating the transfer of convicted citizens between the two countries.
The agreement was signed during Lebanese Interior and Municipalities Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar’s official visit to Pakistan, where he met Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to discuss bilateral relations and cooperation in internal affairs and security.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed Ahmad Al-Hajjar and mentioned the longstanding fraternal ties between Pakistan and Lebanon.
He also conveyed his best wishes for the Lebanese leadership and people.
During the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation, particularly in the areas of internal security and related matters.
The prime minister strongly condemned Israeli actions against Lebanon and expressed deep sympathy over the loss of human lives and damage to property caused by the attacks.
Shehbaz Sharif reasserted Pakistan’s solidarity with the Lebanese leadership and people during difficult circumstances.
The Lebanese interior minister thanked Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for the warm reception extended to him during his visit.
Al-Hajjar also confirmed Lebanon’s commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation with Pakistan, particularly in areas of mutual interest.
The discussions indicated the two countries’ intention to expand institutional cooperation and maintain closer engagement on security and internal affairs.
What the Prisoner Transfer MoU Means
The agreement was signed by the interior ministers of the two countries. Under the arrangement, convicted citizens will have a legal mechanism through which they can potentially serve the remainder of their sentences in their respective home countries, subject to the applicable legal procedures and conditions.
The agreement represents a practical step in Pakistan-Lebanon cooperation and could provide a formal framework for handling cases involving citizens convicted in the other country.
A New Step in Pakistan-Lebanon Relations
The prisoner transfer agreement adds another dimension to the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Lebanon. Alongside discussions on security and internal affairs, the MoU provides a structured mechanism for cooperation concerning convicted nationals.
