Meta is ending WhatsApp support for older Android operating systems, meaning users with certain outdated smartphones may no longer be able to access the messaging platform.
According to a report by a foreign news agency, WhatsApp will discontinue support for smartphones running Android 5.0, Android 5.1 and earlier versions. The change could affect users from September 9, 2026, with some devices potentially experiencing difficulties accessing the app.
WhatsApp regularly introduces new features, improves its interface and rolls out privacy and security updates. However, these upgrades increasingly require newer operating systems and more capable hardware.
Meta said the decision aims to strengthen user security and privacy, maintain the app’s performance and stability, and ensure better support for modern features.
Meanwhile, users with older Android smartphones should check which operating system version their devices run. If a phone cannot upgrade to a supported Android version, users may need to switch to a newer device to continue using WhatsApp.
In addition, Meta continues to develop advanced features, including artificial intelligence-powered tools, which require more modern hardware and software capabilities.
According to the report, Meta will end WhatsApp support for Android versions earlier than Android 6 from September 8, 2026.
As a result, millions of older Android smartphones could eventually lose access to WhatsApp, forcing affected users to upgrade their devices if they want to continue using the messaging service.
