ISLAMABAD: Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry has questioned the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) position on the creation of new provinces, saying that the party can neither take a unilateral decision on the issue nor reject the proposal on its own.
Speaking during Geo News programme Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath, Chaudhry said there should be dialogue on the question of creating new provinces rather than outright opposition to the idea.
He noted that discussions about new provinces had been taking place for years and recalled that when a resolution concerning a new province was introduced, Shehbaz Sharif was serving as Punjab chief minister.
Talal Chaudhry Questions PPP’s Position
Chaudhry questioned why the PPP was unwilling to support discussions on the issue. He said the party had enjoyed continuity in government for longer than many other political groups and should therefore consider dialogue on the proposal.
Referring to the political debate surrounding Sindh, the minister of state questioned whether the narrative being developed was about political ownership or public service. He said the issue was being presented in a manner that could create an impression that the country itself was facing division.
The minister of state also defended Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, saying that he serves under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and follows the premier’s policy direction.
Chaudhry said discussions about provincial restructuring had existed for a long time, but Naqvi’s recent remarks on new provinces had triggered a strong political reaction. He added that some critics appeared determined to find fault with the interior minister even when he made positive statements.
Comments on Imran Khan and PTI
Turning to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, Chaudhry questioned the party’s criticism regarding his health and possible hospital transfer.
He said PTI had previously called for medical treatment when Khan was described as unwell, while questioning why the party was now dissatisfied with his health status. Chaudhry also asked why the interior minister had not been named in any contempt-of-court proceedings if PTI believed he was responsible for the matter.
Addressing PTI protests, Chaudhry issued a strong warning against violence and attacks. He said the government would not provide concessions to anyone involved in an assault and would respond firmly.

He warned that if protesters attempted another offensive, the government’s response could be tougher than the action taken during the November 26 episode.
