PESHAWAR: Targeted killing incidents continue to pose security challenges as an armed attack in the suburban area of Peshawar resulted in the deaths of two individuals, including a former commander of a banned organization.
The violent episode occurred along Choli Ashab Baba Road in the outskirts of Peshawar, near the Khyber tribal district border.
According to local police reports, unidentified assailants opened indiscriminate fire on Syed Akbar, identified as a former commander of the outlawed militant faction Ansar-ul-Islam hailing from Bara, Khyber district.
Syed Akbar died on the spot from his injuries, while his companion, Fazal Sher, sustained critical gunshot wounds.
Fazal Sher was rushed to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries while fighting for his life.
Law enforcement teams quickly cordoned off the crime scene, gathered vital forensic evidence, and initiated a formal investigation into this targeted killing.
Authorities have stated that the exact motives behind the assault and the identities of the perpetrators remain unclear as initial inquiries continue.
Militancy in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has long served as a central theater in Pakistan’s protracted struggle against violent extremism, enduring waves of insurgency, terrorism, and targeted violence.
Situated along the porous border with Afghanistan, the province’s rugged terrain and historical tribal dynamics have frequently been exploited by various militant outfits, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and splinter groups like Ansar-ul-Islam.
Over the past two decades, militancy in the region has evolved from large-scale territorial control into a complex pattern of asymmetrical warfare, including suicide bombings, targeted assassinations of tribal elders, security personnel, and former militant figures, alongside extortion and cross-border infiltration.
Despite major military operations such as Zarb-e-Azb and Radd-ul-Fasaad that successfully dismantled major terrorist infrastructure and restored writ of the state across former Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), the province has witnessed a resurgence in security challenges.

This persistent instability underscores the complex security matrix facing law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Addressing the root causes requires a multi-dimensional approach that combines kinetic counter-terrorism operations with socioeconomic development, border management enhancements, and judicial reforms to permanently eradicate extremist elements from the region.
