RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, left for Iran on Monday as Islamabad stepped up efforts to mediate between Tehran and Washington and promote peace in the region.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi accompanied the Field Marshal on the visit.
Asim Munir is expected to hold talks with senior Iranian officials. He will focus on efforts to secure a peaceful, lasting and comprehensive resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.
The visit comes as the United States prepares to impose economic sanctions on countries and businesses that continue to trade with Iran. Pakistan has maintained contacts with both Tehran and Washington as it seeks to facilitate dialogue and prevent further escalation.
Islamabad has positioned itself as a mediator since the conflict between Iran and the United States erupted in February. Pakistan also helped broker an interim US-Iran peace deal in June.
The latest visit reflects Islamabad’s broader diplomatic push to support de-escalation and regional stability.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Munir’s visit was part of Pakistan’s ongoing “good offices” aimed at strengthening peace and stability in the region, state-run IRNA reported a day earlier.
Baqaei added that Munir would meet senior Iranian officials and hold talks with them during his visit.

Pakistan has repeatedly called for dialogue and peaceful solutions to regional conflicts. Islamabad has also sought to use its ties with both Tehran and Washington to help bridge differences and prevent the conflict from widening.
