CHARSADDA: Funeral prayers for ex-Balochistan governor Lieutenant General (retd) Imran Ullah Khan were offered in Charsadda, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Monday.
Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti attended the funeral prayers and expressed condolences to the bereaved family.
Imran Ullah Khan was a senior Pakistan Army officer who later served as governor of Balochistan. He was appointed governor on May 19, 1994, during the Pakistan Peoples Party-led government, and remained in the post until April 1997.
Born in Charsadda in 1932, Imran Ullah Khan joined the Pakistan Army in 1955 after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain. He served in the 1965 and 1971 wars and later took part in military operations in Siachen.
During his military career, he held several senior positions. These included commandant of the Pakistan Military Academy at Kakul, commander of the 10th Infantry Division in Lahore, adjutant general of the Pakistan Army and commander of X Corps in Rawalpindi.
As commander of X Corps, he was responsible for military operations in the Siachen sector. He retired from the Army in May 1991 after 36 years of commissioned service.
He received several military awards, including the Hilal-i-Imtiaz (Military), Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i-Basalat.
After retiring from the Army, he entered public service as governor of Balochistan. He resigned from the post in 1997 for personal reasons.
