PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police repelled an overnight attack by Fitna al Khawarij militants on a police checkpost in Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, officials said on Saturday.
According to the District Police Officer (DPO), militants attempted to seize the Khazina Banda School Police Checkpost late Friday night.
Police personnel responded immediately and exchanged fire with the attackers for nearly three hours, forcing them to retreat without capturing the post.
One Elite Force officer was wounded during the gun battle and was shifted for medical treatment, the official said.
Police said a search operation was underway in the area to trace the attackers. Security has also been tightened to prevent further attacks.
No militant casualties were immediately reported. Authorities said investigations into the incident were continuing.
