KARACHI: The All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association has formally announced its rejection of the government’s proposed price deregulation policy, warning that the move will severely impact the sector and urging authorities to review the decision.
Chairman Noman Ali Butt stated that petrol pump owners across the country are facing serious concerns, and the government should not place the burden of problems on them. He emphasized that all stakeholders must be taken into confidence before fixing rates with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), as approximately 15,000 petrol pump owners are directly affected by the new policy. Butt further cautioned that the deregulation would adversely affect oil tankers, transportation, and the entire pricing system, demanding that the government consult pump owners instead of making unilateral decisions.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister Ali Pervez Malik, addressing a press conference today, confirmed that the government is moving forward with deregulation. He announced that the cabinet has decided the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) will determine petroleum product prices on a daily basis, keeping in view global market trends. Malik also noted that the levy on petrol and diesel, along with the carbon support levy, are currently lower than previous levels.
