GUYANA : West Indies legendary cricketer Sir Garfield Sobers has passed away at the age of 89.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest all-rounders in the history of the sport, he was born on July 28, 1936, and made his Test debut in 1954.
Throughout his illustrious career, he played 93 Test matches, scoring over 8,000 runs at an average of 57 while also claiming 235 wickets at an average of 34.
Sir Garfield Sobers achieved international prominence in 1958 by scoring his maiden Test century against Pakistan, eventually reaching an unbeaten 365.
This performance set a world record for the highest individual Test score, which stood for decades until it was surpassed by his compatriot, Brian Charles Lara, who scored 375 against England in 1994.
Furthermore, Sobers holds the distinction of being the first batsman in the history of cricket to hit six sixes in a single over during a Test match against England.
