WANA: Pakistani security forces foiled a suicide bombing attempt targeting a mosque in the Kari Kot area of Wana, the headquarters of Lower South Waziristan district in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, officials said.
According to security officials, militants associated with Fitna al Khawarij attempted to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into the mosque during the attack. The mosque was partially damaged in a suicide bombing.
Security forces detected the suicide bomber before the vehicle reached its target and destroyed it, preventing what officials said could have been a major attack.
The suicide bomber and three other militants were killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, officials said.
The explosion caused significant damage to the mosque. No security personnel were injured in the incident.
Authorities have launched a clearance operation in the area to ensure no other militants remain at large. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
