ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Meteorological Department has warned that a fresh spell of rain and windstorms will affect the country’s northern and upper regions through July 13, with urban flooding likely in several major cities.
The department said Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore and Faisalabad face a risk of urban flooding on July 11 and 12.
It said moist currents from the Arabian Sea and an incoming western weather system will intensify from Saturday evening. The system is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, northeastern Balochistan and upper Sindh.
The weather office warned of possible landslides in the mountainous areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.
It also said runoff could increase in seasonal streams in Dera Ghazi Khan district.
Strong winds and lightning may damage vulnerable structures, solar panels, electricity poles and roadside billboards, the department added.
The Meteorological Department advised tourists and travelers to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution during the wet spell.
It said the rainfall is also expected to reduce the intensity of heat and humidity across affected areas.
