ISLAMABAD : In a fresh blow to consumers already grappling with rising inflation, the government has increased the price of kerosene by Rs 11.19 per litre, following similar hikes in petrol and diesel earlier this week.
According to an official notification issued by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), the new price of kerosene has been fixed at Rs 242.33 per litre, effective immediately. The price adjustment comes amid volatile global oil markets and exchange rate pressures.
The development marks the third consecutive fuel price hike in recent days. Earlier, the government raised the price of diesel by Rs 13.80 per litre and petrol by Rs 13.18 per litre, compounding the financial strain on transport, agriculture, and daily commuters.
Kerosene is widely used in off-grid areas for cooking and lighting, particularly in rural and remote regions. The price surge is expected to hit low-income households the hardest, as many rely on the fuel for their daily energy needs.
OGRA, in its notification, attributed the revision to changes in international petroleum prices and fluctuations in the rupee-dollar parity. The authority assured that the new rates have been applied transparently in line with the government’s monthly pricing formula.
No official explanation was provided regarding the timing or frequency of the hikes. However, consumers and transport unions have voiced concern over the cascading impact on essential commodity prices, warning of further inflationary pressures in the weeks ahead.
