BURGENSTOCK: The United States (US) and Iran agreed on a structured 60-day roadmap aimed at reaching a final peace agreement after marathon negotiations in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock.
Mediators Pakistan and Qatar announced the breakthrough in a joint statement. They described it as a significant step forward in ongoing diplomatic efforts.
After intensive talks, both sides agreed to move ahead with a formal framework designed to produce a comprehensive peace deal within 60 days.
The agreement establishes a high-level committee to oversee the process. Technical negotiations will continue immediately.
Specialized working groups will focus on nuclear issues, sanctions, and dispute resolution. The parties also created a mechanism to monitor progress and implement future commitments.
Pakistan and Qatar said the negotiations took place in a positive and constructive atmosphere. They reported encouraging progress on several key issues.
The talks took place in Switzerland, a country widely regarded as one of the world’s leading diplomatic centers.
For decades, Switzerland has hosted negotiations that shaped international politics, conflict resolution, and humanitarian law. Its policy of neutrality has made it a preferred venue for peace talks and multilateral agreements.
The country hosts several major international institutions, including the United Nations Office at Geneva, the World Health Organization, the World Trade Organization, the International Labour Organization, and the International Committee of the Red Cross. It is also home to the UN refugee agency, FIFA, and the Bank for International Settlements.
Switzerland has played a central role in some of the most important agreements in modern history.
The 1949 Geneva Conventions established the core rules governing armed conflict and the protection of civilians, prisoners of war, and wounded combatants.
The 1951 Refugee Convention created the legal foundation for international refugee protection and remains the cornerstone of global refugee policy.
The 1954 Geneva Accords helped end the First Indochina War and temporarily divided Vietnam.
The 1988 Geneva Accords paved the way for the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan and helped bring an end to a major Cold War conflict.
