BERLIN: German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has directly blamed former US President Donald Trump for the current disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that Trump’s policies created the obstacle now threatening global energy supplies.
In an interview with German broadcaster ARD, Pistorius asserted that the strategic waterway—through which nearly one-fifth of global oil passes—has been compromised as a direct consequence of Trump’s approach to the region. “Donald Trump ultimately created this obstacle in the Strait of Hormuz,” Pistorius said, without elaborating on specific actions but referencing the broader geopolitical fallout from Trump’s Middle East strategy.
The Defense Minister emphasized that Europe’s primary interest now lies in removing the obstruction and restoring safe passage. “Keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and providing a secure sea passage there is in the direct interest of Europe,” he stated, noting that the route is critically linked to energy supplies and the recovery of the European economy.
Pistorius further called for de-escalation, urging European nations to work collectively to reduce regional tensions and protect vital maritime routes. “European countries want to reduce tensions in the region and protect sea lanes so that global trade and energy supplies can continue uninterrupted,” he added.
The remarks mark one of the strongest condemnations of Trump’s foreign policy from a senior European official, and come as Germany and its allies explore naval missions to safeguard shipping in the Gulf.
