SWITZERLAND : Delegates from the United States and Iran are scheduled to meet today in the Swiss resort city of Bürgenstock to begin implementing the recently signed Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, according to the Swiss Foreign Ministry .
Representatives from Pakistan and Qatar, who served as mediators in the landmark agreement, will also be present at the talks . However, Swiss officials have not disclosed which delegates will represent each side or provided further details about the nature of the meeting .
The Swiss government’s latest statement notably removed references to the participation of other countries, and officials have declined to comment on the matter .
The Islamabad MoU, electronically signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian earlier this week, calls for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade . The agreement gives both sides 60 days to negotiate a final settlement focused primarily on Iran’s nuclear program .
Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who endorsed the pact as mediator, had initially planned to travel to Switzerland for a formal signing ceremony but postponed the visit after the agreement was finalized digitally . “The signing of this agreement at the highest level demonstrates the commitment of both sides to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict,” Sharif said .
The talks mark the first direct engagement between Washington and Tehran since the conflict began on February 28 . While the Swiss Foreign Ministry confirmed the talks will proceed as planned, Iranian media reported Thursday that Tehran had not yet made a “final decision” on its delegation’s trip, with consultations still ongoing .
