PM Shehbaz Sharif Signs US-Iran Memorandum as Mediator

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding as a mediator in a diplomatic agreement between the United States and Iran.

The Prime Minister’s Office media wing released a short video on its official X account showing PM Shehbaz Sharif signing the memorandum. It described the document as part of a broader diplomatic breakthrough between Washington and Tehran.

The memorandum also bears the signatures of US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, according to official statements. Pakistan said it played a key mediating role in facilitating the process.

Officials said the agreement is seen as an important step toward reducing regional tensions and restoring diplomatic engagement. They said it is expected to open the way for further negotiations between the parties.

Sources said Pakistan’s leadership, particularly Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, played a central role in advancing the diplomatic process and bringing both sides to the table.

According to the details, the memorandum aims to build trust, reduce tensions and provide a framework for comprehensive future talks.

The Prime Minister earlier announced on X that the agreement had been electronically signed between the United States and Iran. He said it was endorsed by him in his role as mediator.

Sharif said the agreement would take effect immediately. He said Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States would lift its naval blockade as a first step.

He praised US President Donald Trump for his commitment to diplomacy. He also thanked US negotiators JD Vance, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for their efforts.

He acknowledged Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian for their leadership and commitment to peace.

Sharif also recognized the role of Iranian negotiators Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi and Eskandar Momeni.

He thanked Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Egypt for their diplomatic support. He also praised Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his role in facilitating the breakthrough.

Sharif said the agreement would serve as a foundation for regional peace, mutual respect and shared prosperity.
