PM Shehbaz Announces ‘Islamabad MoU’ Signed Between US and Iran

PM Shehbaz Condemns Fresh Strikes on UAE, Calls for Upholding Ceasefire

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced on Thursday the electronic signing of the historic “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” between the United States and Iran, marking a major diplomatic breakthrough to end hostilities and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

 

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister confirmed that the MoU was electronically signed by the presidents of both countries and endorsed by him as the mediator. The agreement takes effect immediately, with Iran committing to instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz and the United States agreeing to lift its naval blockade without delay.

 

“Pakistan with the support of co-mediator State of Qatar will host the official ceremony as scheduled on 19 June 2026 in Switzerland, to commemorate this landmark event and commence with the technical level talks,” the Prime Minister stated.

 

PM Sharif extended heartfelt congratulations to US President Donald J. Trump, praising his “steadfast commitment to diplomacy and preference for peaceful resolution” in helping end a conflict that could have devastated the region and beyond. He also commended the US negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, for their invaluable contributions.

 

The Prime Minister expressed profound respect for Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, and President Masoud Pezeshkian for their “wisdom, foresight and statesmanship in embracing the cause of peace.” He also acknowledged the Iranian negotiating team, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Eskandar Momeni, for their patience and commitment to constructive engagement.

 

PM Sharif specifically praised the leadership of Qatar for its sincere efforts as co-mediator, as well as the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Türkiye, and the Arab Republic of Egypt for their indispensable roles and contributions. He also made special mention of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, whose “tireless efforts, selfless dedication and instrumental role” were critical in facilitating the breakthrough and advancing regional stability.

 

“This Memorandum of Understanding serve as an enduring foundation for greater understanding, mutual respect and shared prosperity for the complete region,” the Prime Minister concluded.
