EU Backs Pakistan’s Right to Self-Defence Against Cross-Border Terrorism

The European Union has voiced support for Pakistan’s right to defend itself against terrorism, warning that militant groups operating from Afghanistan pose a serious threat to regional and international security.

Speaking to Amu TV, EU Special Representative for Afghanistan Gilles Bertrand said it is no secret that several international terrorist organisations, including Fitna al-Khawarij, maintain a presence on Afghan soil. He said their activities continue to undermine peace and stability across the region.

Bertrand said Pakistan cannot be expected to remain passive when it faces cross-border terrorism and violent attacks. He added that the European Union regards ISIS-Khorasan as one of the most significant global terrorist threats originating from Afghanistan.

The EU envoy noted that Russia, China, the United States and the European Union have all expressed concerns about the presence of terrorist groups in Afghanistan. He said the international community is treating the issue with growing urgency.

Security and regional affairs analysts said the concerns raised by the EU and other major powers highlight that terrorism emanating from Afghanistan is not merely a domestic issue. They said it has broader implications for regional and global security.

Analysts added that European support for Pakistan’s right to self-defence reinforces Islamabad’s position that counterterrorism measures are receiving international recognition. They stressed that coordinated international efforts remain essential to address the threat and preserve regional stability.
