Late Uruguay Goal Denies Saudi Arabia a Famous World Cup Win

In a thrilling FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H encounter, Saudi Arabia once again came agonisingly close to a major upset but failed to hold on for victory as Uruguay struck late to secure a 1-1 draw.

Saudi Arabia dominated the first half and took the lead through Abdullah Al-Amri. The goal came after Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera attempted to stop a header from a corner, but the rebound fell kindly and was turned into the net.

The Saudi side produced a disciplined defensive performance in the opening half and looked set to surprise the football world once again, reminiscent of their famous victory over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

However, Uruguay head coach Marcelo Bielsa changed tactics after the break, making two key substitutions, including the withdrawal of striker Darwin Núñez, in an effort to increase the team’s tempo and attacking intensity.

The changes helped Uruguay take control of the match. Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais made a series of outstanding saves to keep his side in front as pressure mounted.

The breakthrough finally came around the 80th minute when Maxi Araújo reacted quickest to a rebound and fired the ball into the net to level the score.

Uruguay continued to push for a winner in the closing stages. Federico Valverde came close with a dangerous effort, but Al-Owais produced another excellent save to deny him.

At full time, both teams settled for a point each, leaving Group H wide open and making the race for qualification even more competitive.
