KURRAM: A deadly clash between two armed groups of the Fitna al Khawarij in central Kurram has left 19 militants, including commanders dead, according to security and local sources.
Officials said intense fighting broke out overnight in the Manato area of Kamran Khel, within the jurisdiction of Chinarak police station in Central Kurram.
Sources identified the rival groups as the Khariji Kazim group and the Mumtaz alias Umtai group. Both sides exchanged heavy fire during the confrontation.
According to confirmed reports, 19 militants from the Mumtaz alias Umatai group were killed in the clash. One militant from the Kazim group also died in the fighting.
Local sources said grave-digging was underway in the Manato area for the burial of the deceased militants.
Authorities said this was not the first instance of infighting between militant factions in the region. They added that previous clashes had also taken place over extortion disputes, internal disagreements, and territorial control.
Police said multiple militant groups remain active in central Kurram. Security forces have conducted several operations in the area in the past.
Officials further stated that hundreds of Khawarij militants have been killed in past operations. They added that security forces have destroyed multiple militant hideouts and training facilities in the region.
