ISLAMABAD: Tensions have surfaced between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership and opposition leader Mahmood Achakzai, with sources indicating that Achakzai is angry over being sidelined on important decisions.
According to well-placed sources, Achakzai was not taken into confidence before PTI announced its rallies scheduled for April 9 and April 19. The sources added that while some party leaders informed him after the public announcement, the move left Achakzai deeply displeased. In protest, he chose not to attend the PTI rally in Mardan.
PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has stepped in to address the brewing discord. Sources say Barrister Gohar met with Sohail Afridi and agreed on the need to consult Achakzai more closely moving forward.
Speaking to SAMAA’s special correspondent, Barrister Gohar sought to downplay the rift, describing Achakzai as a vital ally. “Mahmood Achakzai is an ally, and there is no mistrust between us,” he said. “He definitely met the Chief Minister, but I cannot disclose the internal affairs of the party. We try to include Mahmood Achakzai in every decision.”
When asked about Achakzai’s reported anger, Barrister Gohar added, “I do not know if Mahmood Achakzai is angry. If this is the case, we will resolve his concerns.”
The episode highlights the challenges PTI faces in keeping its coalition partners aligned as it gears up for a series of public mobilizations.
