ISLAMABAD: A major escalation between the United States and Iran was averted following diplomatic efforts led by Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir. Competing claims of success have since been made by both sides.
A two-week ceasefire was announced by Donald Trump, who publicly credited his administration’s role.
A statement by Abbas Araghchi was later shared by Trump on Truth Social. Pakistan’s leadership was praised in the statement for its diplomatic engagement and for helping steer the region away from a wider conflict.
Gratitude was expressed by Iran toward Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Munir for their role in de-escalation efforts.
It was stated that the process followed a request made by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A 15-point proposal from the United States was also referenced.
An announcement was made by President Trump that a 10-point proposal from Iran had been accepted as the basis for negotiations.
It was conveyed by Iran that defensive operations would be halted if attacks against it were stopped.
It was further indicated that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured for two weeks. Coordination with Iran’s armed forces and technical considerations would be taken into account.
These measures were described by Iran as steps toward reducing tensions and advancing a negotiated resolution.
