WASHINGTON : A massive wave of protests swept across the United States over the weekend, with an estimated 7 million people taking to the streets on Saturday to condemn President Donald Trump’s decision to wage war on Iran. Organizers said the demonstrations marked one of the largest coordinated anti-war mobilizations in American history.
In New York, Hollywood actor Robert De Niro delivered a fiery speech at a “No Kings” Day ceremony, sharply criticizing the president and the political establishment that enables him.
“Trump cannot do his wrong deeds without the connivance of Congress and his staff,” De Niro told the crowd. “Corrupt leaders must be stopped from enriching themselves.”
The protests, which began Saturday, are expected to intensify on Sunday, with organizers planning 3,200 rallies across all 50 states. Protest administration officials said the anticipated turnout would make it the largest single-day protest movement in the nation’s history.
Demonstrations were not confined to the United States. In Israel, major rallies erupted in several cities opposing the imposition of war on Iran. Israeli police deployed force in an attempt to disperse protesters. In Tel Aviv, women and elderly demonstrators were seen chanting slogans against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s stance on Iran, according to Russian media reports.
Globally, “No Kings” rallies took place in cities across Italy, France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, and Australia, where protesters voiced solidarity with the US movement and demanded an immediate end to the war.
