Govt Increases Rs200 Levy on High-Octane Fuel for Luxury Cars To Ease Crisis

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a meeting and approved a sharp increase in levy on high-octane fuel used in luxury vehicles, officials said.

The government raised the levy from Rs100 per litre to Rs300 per litre. Officials said the move will generate savings of about Rs9 billion per month.

Shehbaz Sharif said the measure will ease pressure on the economy and ensure that affluent segments bear a greater share of the burden. He directed that the savings be passed on to the public as relief.

Officials said the decision will not affect fuel prices for ordinary vehicles. They added that public transport fares and air travel costs will remain unchanged.

The prime minister had earlier directed relevant ministries to propose measures on high-octane fuel pricing.

The meeting was attended by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, along with senior officials.
