Govt announces temporary salary cuts for senior officials under austerity measures

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to introduce temporary salary reductions for senior public officials as part of a broader austerity and fuel conservation initiative aimed at reducing public expenditure and improving financial discipline.

In this regard, the salary deductions will apply to officers receiving monthly salaries ranging from three hundred thousand to over three million rupees.

Those receiving salaries between Rs1 million and Rs2 million will see a fifteen percent reduction, while officers earning between Rs2 million and Rs3 million will have twenty-five percent deducted.

The government stated that the funds generated through these temporary deductions will be allocated to public welfare and citizen facilitation initiatives.

The government has also issued detailed guidelines related to austerity and fuel conservation. The notification clarifies that the policies regarding remote work and a four-day work week will not apply to law enforcement agencies and civil armed forces.

Similarly, operational vehicles belonging to these institutions will be exempt from the general restrictions placed on government transport.

In this sense, instructions have been issued to provide APN devices required for the e-office system within four days. Ministries and divisions have been asked to immediately send their requirements for these devices to the Ministry of Information Technology to ensure smooth implementation of the digital workflow.

Meanwhile, the government has established a sub-committee to oversee the transfer of financial savings into the Prime Minister’s Austerity Fund 2026. The committee will be headed by the Secretary of Finance and will include provincial finance secretaries as members.

The sub-committee has been tasked with developing a comprehensive mechanism for managing and transferring the savings generated through the austerity measures.
