North Korea has launched around ten ballistic missiles into the sea amid ongoing joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.
The missiles were fired toward the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea. South Korea’s military said the launches appeared to have originated from North Korea’s eastern coastal region.
The Japanese Coast Guard also confirmed detecting a possible ballistic missile. Meanwhile, international media reports indicated that South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff stated the missiles were likely launched from areas near North Korea’s capital, Pyongyang.
The missile launches come as the United States and South Korea are conducting their annual joint military exercises.
In this regard, approximately 28,500 United States troops are stationed in South Korea, along with fighter aircraft squadrons and other military assets that support the security alliance between Washington and Seoul.
South Korea’s Prime Minister met with US President Donald Trump in Washington to discuss diplomatic efforts concerning North Korea.
