US deploys B-2 bombers, 5000 troops as Iran war escalates

WEB DESK: The Middle East is on the brink of a major confrontation as the United States has initiated a significant military buildup in response to heightened threats from Iran, including the announced closure of the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The Pentagon has dispatched B-2 stealth bombers to the region and approved the deployment of thousands of additional troops, signaling a potentially severe escalation in the long-standing conflict.

In a stark warning to Tehran, US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via social media that it has deployed B-2 Spirit bombers to the region. CENTCOM’s message was notably severe, stating that the mission of the long-range strategic bombers is not only to “eliminate the threat posed by the Iranian regime from a long distance” but also to ensure its “inability to regain power in the future.” The phrasing has raised concerns in diplomatic circles about the potential scope of US military objectives.

Simultaneously, the US military footprint in the region is set to expand significantly. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, the US Department of Defense has approved a request from CENTCOM to send approximately 5,000 US Marines to the Middle East. This request was made amid intelligence indicating that Iran is preparing for aggressive actions against maritime traffic, including attacks on ships and the laying of mines in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil passes. The deployment follows Iran’s recent announcement of its intention to close the strait.

Iranian state media, via the Revolutionary Guards, has claimed responsibility for shooting down several drones in recent days. According to a statement from the Guards, air defense operations successfully destroyed five drones belonging to Israel and the United States. The operations reportedly took place over multiple cities, including Tabriz, Tehran, and Bandar Abbas. The statement claimed that the downed drones included modern MQ-9 models, as well as Hermas and Bater 4 drones, and asserted that a total of 114 drones have been destroyed since the beginning of the conflict
