WEB DESK: In a closed-door briefing with members of Congress, top US officials have stated that drones from Iran are presenting a major and unexpected challenge to American air defense systems CNN claims in its report while citing multiple sources aware of the briefings.
According to sources who were in the room, Defense Secretary Pat Hegseth and General Dan Kaine, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acknowledged that the drones are a bigger problem than previously thought. The main issue, they explained, is that the drones fly at low altitudes and at slow speeds. This makes them much harder for advanced air defense systems to detect and intercept compared to fast-flying ballistic missiles.
The officials reportedly told lawmakers that it is possible not all of these drones can be successfully shot down.
However, other officials at the briefing attempted to ease some of the concerns. They pointed out that the United States’ allies in the Gulf region are aware of the threat and are taking steps to prepare. These allies are currently stockpiling large numbers of interceptor missiles to bolster their own defenses against the Iranian drones.
