Major Blow for Pakistan as Key Player Ruled Out Ahead of Bangladesh Tour

LAHORE: Pakistan suffered a major setback ahead of its tour of Bangladesh after aggressive opener Fakhar Zaman was ruled out of the upcoming One-Day International series with a hamstring injury.

Fakhar recently played a match-winning knock against Sri Lanka national cricket team in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. He powered Pakistan to victory with an explosive innings. However, he felt discomfort in his hamstring during a recent match. Medical tests later confirmed the injury.

Team management advised complete rest to avoid long-term damage. Fakhar will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy under the supervision of specialist physiotherapists.

Pakistan will tour Bangladesh later this month for a three-match ODI series. The squad will arrive in Dhaka on March 9 and train on March 10. The matches will take place on March 11, 13 and 15 at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The venue has produced several intense contests between the two sides in the past.

This will mark Pakistan’s second tour of Bangladesh since July 2025. Bangladesh won the T20 series during Pakistan’s previous visit. In contrast, Bangladesh toured Pakistan in May and June 2025, where the home side secured a 3-0 series win under the leadership of Salman Ali Agha.

Media reports said the selection committee is considering giving opportunities to young players as it builds a stronger ODI combination. Officials may rest underperforming players from the T20 format. Reports suggested the panel is seriously evaluating changes involving Saim Ayub, Babar Azam and Mohammad Nawaz to test new faces for the future.

Security concerns have also surfaced amid regional tensions. However, officials said the series will proceed as scheduled unless travel risks escalate. Both cricket boards continue to monitor the situation closely.

Fakhar’s absence will force Pakistan to reshape its opening combination. It also creates an opportunity for young players to stake their claim at the international level.
