KARACHI: Police on Saturday arrested over two dozen Afghan nationals during a large-scale search operation in the Sohrab Goth area, officials said.
The operation was conducted on the special instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh. According to police details, the primary target of the drive was individuals residing illegally in the country.
To ensure the effectiveness of the operation, authorities sealed all entry and exit points of the area. A contingent of police personnel, led by DSP Aurangzeb Khattak, then conducted a house-to-house search.
Officials used biometric devices to verify the identity of the residents and identify any suspects. A heavy police presence was deployed throughout the operation to maintain security.
Sources confirmed that more than 20 Afghan nationals were taken into custody during the raids. The detainees have been moved to an undisclosed location for further interrogation as investigations continue.
Meanwhile the European Union has thrown its weight behind Pakistan’s position on cross-border terrorism, calling on the Taliban administration in Afghanistan to take decisive actionp operating from Afghan soil.
In a statement issued early Saturday, the Council of the European Union voiced deep concern over the recent hostilities along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, warning that the escalating conflict “could have serious implications for the region.”
The Council urged both Kabul and Islamabad to engage immediately in dialogue and to respect international law, particularly with regard to humanitarian considerations. “The protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure must be ensured, and all feasible precautions must be taken to prevent further civilian harm,” the statement read.
