Act to be passed for minimum wage for employees

Lahore: A bill to amend the Provincial Employees’ Social Security Ordinance 1965 has been introduced in the Punjab Assembly.

The Punjab government is determined to make a minimum wage of Rs40,000 mandatory for employees.

According to details, the bill proposes legal reforms in line with contemporary requirements and will be known as the Provincial Employees Social Security (Amendment) Act 2026.

As per the text of the bill, the minimum wage has now been set at Rs40,000.

However, the old provision regarding the wage ceiling from the 1965 ordinance remains in place, with the maximum wage limit fixed at Rs22,000, leading to legal and administrative complications.

The bill states that it is essential to validate the social security contributions paid since July 2022.

These amendments will prevent a loss of Rs24 billion.

Following its introduction, the bill has been referred to a committee for two months.

After approval by the committee, it will be presented for passage in the assembly, and final assent will be given by the Governor of Punjab.
