The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially confirmed that Bangladesh will directly qualify for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, putting an end to weeks of speculation within international cricket circles.
The ICC clarified that Bangladesh secured its place in the tournament on the basis of its current global T20I ranking. The announcement comes after widespread debate among fans and analysts following Bangladesh’s absence from the latter stages of the most recent edition of the tournament.
In this sense, all teams that progressed to the Super Eight stage of the ongoing competition have automatically qualified for the 2028 event. Meanwhile, co-host nations have also secured guaranteed entry.
New Zealand had already confirmed its participation as a host nation, while Australia will feature in the event despite not reaching the Super Eight stage, owing to its hosting status.
The 2028 T20 World Cup will feature 20 teams. So far, eight teams will advance through a global qualifying pathway. Nine teams have already confirmed their spots either through performance benchmarks or host privileges.
The remaining three teams are scheduled to be finalized based on the ICC Men’s T20I rankings as of March 9.
Bangladesh holds the ninth position in the rankings, strengthening its qualification claim. Afghanistan, currently ranked tenth, and Ireland, placed twelfth, are also in a stable position.
