COLOMBO: The Super Eights stage of the ICC Men’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup begins in Colombo on Saturday, with Pakistan set to face New Zealand in the opening match.
New Zealand batter Mark Chapman said his side understands the challenge Pakistan pose and has prepared clear plans for the contest.
“We have played Pakistan more than any other team in recent times,” Chapman told reporters. “We know their strengths and we know what to plan.”
He said conditions in the region often make the toss crucial. Several New Zealand players have prior experience in similar conditions, he added, which should help the team adjust quickly.
Chapman noted that pitches in India have largely favored batters, leaving bowlers with limited margin for error. He said spin could play a decisive role in these conditions.
“Pakistan always have quality spinners. Everyone is a threat,” he said, pointing to the unique bowling action of Pakistan’s Usman Tariq, whom he described as difficult to read.
Chapman stressed that facing spin requires careful shot selection and clear planning. He added that New Zealand also have bowlers capable of thriving in spin-friendly conditions.

He confirmed that captain Mitchell Santner is eager to lead the side in the match. Fast bowler Lockie Ferguson has rejoined the squad, though Chapman said he could not confirm whether Ferguson would feature in the playing XI.
