Deputy PM to Visit New York to Attend UN Security Council Briefing on Palestine

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, will travel to New York on Wednesday to participate in a high-level United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the situation in Palestine, the foreign ministry said.

The briefing comes days after Israel approved land registration in the West Bank for the first time since 1967. The move is expected to facilitate Jewish settlement purchases and could lead to further annexation. It follows reports of Israeli ceasefire violations in Gaza.

Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Indonesia, Egypt, and Türkiye have condemned Israel’s action, calling it a step to accelerate illegal settlements, confiscate land, and impose unlawful sovereignty over Palestinian territory.

During the UNSC session, presided over by UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Dar will reaffirm Pakistan’s principled and consistent support for Palestine.

A foreign ministry statement said Dar will reiterate Pakistan’s strong opposition to Israel’s “illegal decisions” in the West Bank, emphasize the need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, call for full implementation of Security Council Resolution 2803, demand scaled-up humanitarian assistance, and push for the early recovery and reconstruction of Gaza.

UNSC Resolution 2803, adopted on November 17, endorsed a framework for Gaza’s administration under international oversight, following a plan unveiled by the White House in October.

Dar will highlight Pakistan’s continued engagement with international and regional partners, including the Group of Eight Arab and Islamic nations and the United States, to support a just and lasting peace based on international law and the realization of Palestinian self-determination.

He will also reiterate Pakistan’s call for an independent, sovereign, and contiguous Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
