DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Armed militants associated with Fitna al Khawarij launched a late-nigh in the northwestern city of Dera Ismail Khan, opening fire on passenger buses and a customs office, police said.
Gunmen first targeted unarmed civilians and then ambushed police officers responding to the scene, according to security officials.
Police deployed a quick response unit immediately after receiving reports of the attack. Officers engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle.
One police officer was killed in the exchange of fire. Two others sustained injuries. Authorities shifted the wounded to a nearby hospital and said they are receiving medical treatment.
Police forced the attackers to flee after a strong counterattack.
Authorities placed the city on high alert following the assault. Security forces sealed off the area and deployed heavy contingents across key نقاط.
Police launched a search operation to track down and arrest those involved.
