Former Cricket Captains Also Seek NRO for Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD: Former international cricket captains from around the world have expressed deep concern over reports about the imprisonment and health of Pakistan’s former captain and ex-prime minister Imran Khan. They urged the Pakistani government to give the matter immediate attention.

In a joint statement, the former skippers said the global cricket community widely recognizes Khan’s contributions to the sport. As captain, he led Pakistan to a historic victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, a triumph they described as a symbol of skill, resilience, leadership and sportsmanship that inspired generations beyond national borders.

Several of the signatories said they had competed against Khan, played alongside him, or admired his all-round abilities, charismatic leadership and competitive spirit. They noted that, regardless of political differences, Khan was democratically elected and served in his country’s highest office.

The statement voiced particular concern over recent reports about Khan’s health, especially claims of a serious deterioration in his eyesight during detention, as well as the conditions of his confinement over the past two and a half years.

The former captains said cricket teaches values of fairness, dignity and respect that extend beyond the field. They argued that a global sporting icon and former national leader deserves humane and dignified treatment.

They called on the Pakistani government to provide Khan with immediate, appropriate and continuous medical care, including access to doctors of his choice. They also urged authorities to ensure detention conditions meet international standards, allow regular family visits and guarantee transparent and fair access to legal proceedings without unnecessary delays.
