Electricity users under 200 units surge to 21 Million: Awais

Islamabad: Federal Energy Minister Awais Leghari Says Number of Consumers Using Less Than 200 Units of Electricity Has Risen to Over 21 Million

During an appearance on Geo News’ program Naya Pakistan, Federal Minister for Energy Awais Leghari stated that the number of electricity consumers using less than 200 units per month has increased from over 9 million to more than 21 million.

He explained that affluent people are installing solar systems and now falling into the under-200-unit category.

Providing a 70% discount on electricity to such a large segment is beyond the financial capacity of the state.

The minister added that in the recent relief package for industry, the Prime Minister announced the elimination of cross-subsidy.

Awais Leghari also clarified that Pakistan’s industrial electricity tariff has now come close to rates in other regional countries.

He described claims that electricity costs 6 to 7 cents per unit in Bangladesh as incorrect.
