DERA GHAZI KHAN: Citing the ongoing tense security situation in neighboring Balochistan, the Punjab government has taken the drastic step of completely closing its land border with the province, suspending all types of inter-provincial traffic. The decision was announced on Saturday by the district administration of Dera Ghazi Khan, the key border district.
Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Usman Khalid confirmed the comprehensive closure, stating, “All traffic going to Balochistan has been stopped.” He specified that passengers are currently unable to travel to Balochistan via Dera Ghazi Khan. The major inter-provincial crossing points at Bawata, Rakhi Gaj, and the Taunsa Musakhel Road have been suspended. “No vehicle is allowed to go to Balochistan from Punjab,” he emphasized.
This severe restriction on movement follows a series of major terrorist attacks across Balochistan over the weekend, which prompted a large-scale military response. In recent days, security forces foiled attacks in various areas including Quetta and Gwadar. According to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), 92 terrorists, including three suicide bombers, were killed in subsequent clearance operations.
The ISPR has vowed to continue its campaign relentlessly, stating that planners, facilitators, and assistants “will be brought to justice at all costs.” It affirmed that operations “will continue until the complete elimination of terrorism under the resolve of stability” (Azm-e-Istehkam).
The border closure, while a preventive security measure, has severely disrupted travel and trade. Hundreds of passengers and commercial vehicles are stranded, facing significant uncertainty.
