ICC Suspends USA Batter Aaron Jones for match-fixing

DUBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has provisionally suspended key United States player Aaron Jones ahead of the T20 World Cup.

On Wednesday, the ICC announced that the 31-year-old USA batter Aaron Jones has been charged with five breaches of the anti-corruption codes of both the ICC and Cricket West Indies (CWI).

He has been immediately suspended from all forms of cricket.

According to the ICC, most of the charges stem from his participation in the Bim10 tournament held in Barbados during the 2023-24 season, which falls under CWI’s jurisdiction, while two charges relate to international matches governed by the ICC’s code.

The specific charges against Aaron Jones are as follows:

  • Breach of Article 2.1.1 of the CWI Code: Fixing (or attempting to fix), contriving to fix, or improperly influencing (or attempting to do so) the result, progress, conduct, or any other aspect of matches in the Bim10 tournament 2023/24.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.2 of the CWI Code: Failing to disclose to Cricket West Indies details of any approaches or invitations to engage in conduct that would breach the CWI Anti-Corruption Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.4 of the CWI Code: Failing or refusing to cooperate with a reasonable investigation conducted by the Designated Anti-Corruption Official (or designee) regarding possible offenses under the CWI Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.4 of the ICC Code: Failing to provide the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) with full details of any approaches or invitations received to engage in corrupt conduct under the ICC Code.
  • Breach of Article 2.4.7 of the ICC Code: Obstructing the ACU’s investigation into possible corrupt conduct by concealing, tampering with, or otherwise interfering with information that could have been relevant as evidence or led to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct.

The ICC stated that these charges are part of a broader ongoing investigation, which may lead to additional charges against other individuals in the coming days.
