DAVOS:  The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has publicly commended the economic reform agenda of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government, offering a significant endorsement on the global stage of the World Economic Forum.

Speaking at the forum in Davos, Georgieva expressed deep personal respect for the Pakistani leader. “I respect Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif from the bottom of my heart,” she stated, highlighting his determination and follow-through. “When Shehbaz Sharif sets out to do something, he leaves after completing it,” she added, underscoring her confidence in his executive approach.

The IMF chief, who has met with PM Sharif several times, noted that their discussions consistently focus on tracking progress against set goals and planning future development objectives. She affirmed that the Pakistani government is “seriously implementing reforms,” a crucial assessment as Pakistan navigates a tough economic stabilization program supported by the IMF.

Importantly, Georgieva indicated that these difficult measures are beginning to yield tangible outcomes. “The positive results of the government’s actions have started to be received,” she said, pointing to a landmark achievement: “For the first time, budgetary discipline is visible.” She further noted that resources are now being directed towards creating “positive changes in the lives of the people.”

This public validation from the head of Pakistan’s key international financial institution marks a positive moment for the government, which has faced domestic pressure over austerity measures linked to the IMF program. The praise suggests the country’s economic policy is gaining credibility with international stakeholders, a vital factor for future stability and investment.
