Second-hand mobile phones in Pakistan, police warn of legal risks

Rising Inflation Drives Demand for Second-Hand Mobile Phones in Pakistan, Police Warn of Legal Risks

The rising inflation and the soaring prices of new smartphones in Pakistan, the trend of purchasing second-hand mobile phones is growing rapidly across the country. Many consumers are turning to used devices as a cost-effective alternative to expensive new models, hoping to access better features at lower prices.

However, law enforcement authorities have warned that this seemingly affordable option can sometimes lead to serious legal complications for buyers.

In this regard, the recent investigations conducted by the Lahore Police Mobile Tracking Unit, more than 35,000 mobile phones reported as stolen or snatched have been recovered in Lahore over the past few years.

The police officials revealed that a significant number of these recovered phones were being used by individuals who had purchased them from local markets, online platforms, or unverified sellers without confirming their legal status.

The authorities stated that many buyers unknowingly end up purchasing stolen mobile phones due to the absence of proper verification procedures. These devices were sold without official receipts or valid documentation, making it difficult for buyers to prove ownership later.

So far, the police officials emphasized that under the law, anyone found using a stolen or illegal mobile phone may be required to face investigation, even if the phone was purchased unknowingly.

As a result, several individuals have had to make repeated visits to police stations, while their phones were confiscated during investigations. Meanwhile, consumers have been advised to verify the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of any mobile phone before making a purchase.

The officials recommend buying used mobile phones only from authorized and registered dealers and ensuring that a proper sales receipt is obtained at the time of purchase.
