KARACHI: The Sindh Government’s Education Department has begun considering a change in the schedule of winter vacations starting from the 2026–27 academic session, in view of the fact that cold weather now intensifies in January rather than December.
The proposed change will be placed before the upcoming Steering Committee meeting, after which it is likely that winter vacations across Karachi and the rest of Sindh will begin in January instead of the last ten days of December in the next academic session.
Sources in the Education Department stated that climate variations have been observed for several years, showing that December in Sindh does not experience severe winter conditions.
In contrast, January brings harsher cold, icy winds, and temperatures dropping to single digits.
However, under the current system, winter holidays end and schools reopen on January 1, forcing students to attend school during extremely cold weather.
The sources further added that in the current academic session, winter holidays had already ended when the cold intensified further.
As a result, with the approval of Sindh Education Minister Sardar Shah, school timings were temporarily revised for the convenience of students.
From Monday, January 12 to January 26, schools will start at 9:00 a.m., and a formal notification has been issued in this regard.
For the upcoming year, the matter will now be formally discussed in the Education Department’s Steering Committee.
If approved, the new academic calendar is expected to schedule winter vacations across Karachi and Sindh in the first ten days of January 2027.
