Israel launched direct attack on Somalia's internationally recognised borders: Ishaq Dar

JEDDAH: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland. The Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah, Dar said Pakistan firmly rejects Israel’s decision to recognise Somaliland and the visit of the Israeli foreign minister to the region.

He described the move as illegal, unrealistic, and deeply alarming, stressing that it amounts to a direct attack on Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Furthermore, Dar reasserted that Pakistan fully respects and supports Somalia’s sovereignty

He said that under international law, the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states are fundamental principles, and no external actor has the legal or moral authority to alter internationally recognised borders.

The foreign minister warned that Israel’s action poses a serious threat to peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. He noted that Pakistan, together with other OIC member states, has rejected Israel’s move through a joint statement.

Dar also acknowledged the sacrifices made by the Somali people and their security forces in safeguarding national stability. Moreover, he further cautioned that such actions could undermine both regional and global efforts to combat terrorism.

Pakistan, he said, has also raised the issue at the United Nations, emphasising that Israel’s move violates international law and the principles of the UN Charter. The attempt to destabilise Somalia or hinder its development, Dar added, would have serious regional repercussions.

Meanwhile, Dar said the country has made notable advances in national reconciliation and constitutional reforms.

He stressed the importance of strengthening state institutions, ensuring transparency in economic reforms, and holding elections based on the will of the people as a true symbol of democratic development.

He also underlined that forced displacement in any form constitutes a violation of international law. Dar confirmed Pakistan’s strong support for the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. He called for immediate efforts to end the war in Gaza, ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance, and said Pakistan would continue to work closely with the OIC and Arab countries on this issue.
